What to expect during a Mayofascial Release session.

Myofascial Release is a gentle, hands-on form of bodywork that works with the body slowly and respectfully, using sustained pressure, gentle stretching of the fascial tissue, and subtle traction to support release and restore balance within the body.

Fascia is the body’s connective tissue system. A continuous web of liquid-filled microtubules that surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, organs, and joints. Physical injury, repetitive stress, inflammation, surgery, emotional stress, and trauma can all create restrictions within this fascial system. Over time, these restrictions may contribute to pain, tension, limited mobility, postural imbalances, and a feeling of disconnection within the body.

It is helpful to wear clothing that allows for as much skin contact as possible, such as shorts and a loose tank top or sports bra. This allows me to work directly with the fascial tissue and also observe the body’s natural responses throughout the session, such as warmth, flushing, softening, unwinding movements, or areas beginning to release.

During your session, I will use various hands-on techniques to release fascial restrictions such as sustained pressure, cross-stretching of the fascial fibers, tissue manipulation, and gentle joint traction.

During the session, gentle hands-on techniques are used to support the fascia in releasing at its own pace. Rather than forcing the body to change, the work invites the tissue to soften gradually, allowing the body’s own intelligence to guide the process. Many people experience sessions as deeply calming and restorative, often entering a meditative or deeply relaxed state.

Because fascia is closely connected to both physical and emotional experiences, it is not uncommon for sessions to bring awareness to stored tension, emotions, or patterns held within the body. As areas begin to release, you may experience sensations such as warmth, tingling, emotional release, spontaneous movement, deeper breathing, tears, shaking, stretching, or a sense of energetic unwinding. These responses are natural expressions of the body reorganizing and releasing what it no longer needs to hold.

There is no need to force, analyze, or “figure out” the experience. The invitation is simply to remain present, gentle, and open to the process unfolding in the way your body uniquely needs.

Healing and integration may continue after the session has ended. Some people leave feeling lighter, more spacious, grounded, and at ease within their bodies, while others may notice temporary fatigue, emotional sensitivity, soreness, or an increased awareness of areas asking for care and attention. Healing is rarely linear — it is often a gradual unwinding and reconnecting process.

Supporting yourself gently after a session can be deeply beneficial. Rest when needed, stay hydrated, spend time in nature, nourish yourself with simple whole foods, breathe deeply, and allow space for whatever emotions or sensations may be moving through. Often, the most supportive thing we can do is listen to the body rather than override it.

For those experiencing chronic pain, long-standing postural patterns, injury, or deeper layers of physical and emotional holding, a series of sessions is often the most supportive approach. Consistent sessions allow the body the time and safety needed to unwind more deeply and create lasting change. You may also be given simple self-release techniques and practices to continue supporting your body between sessions and within your daily life.
